  • Account for trends in solubility in water.
Chemical Properties
  • State reagents/ conditions for the reactions that alcohols can undergo.
  • Determine nucleophilic substitution products (Nu = Cl–/Br–/I–).
  • Determine elimination products (using Saytzeff's rule).
  • Determine oxidation products.
Phenols
  • Explain why phenols cannot undergo nucleophilic substitution.
  • Explain why phenols are more acidic than alcohols.
  • State reagents/ conditions for the reactions that phenols can undergo.
  • Determine extent and position of substitution on the benzene ring under different conditions.
