TYPES OF QUESTIONS:

Halogenoalkanes
  • State reagents/ conditions for the reactions that halogenoalkanes can undergo.
  • Determine nucleophilic substitution products.
  • Determine elimination products (using Saytzeff's rule).
  • Write nucleophilic substitution mechanisms (SN1 and SN2).
  • Suggest the (1) rate equation, (2) energy profile diagram and (3) stereochemistry involved for SN1 and SN2.
  • Explain why methyl/ 1° RX undergoes SN2 while 3° RX undergoes SN1.
  • Suggest test and/ or predict observations for identifying halogenoalkanes containing different halogens.
  • Explain the difference in rates for the hydrolysis of halogenoalkanes containing different halogens.
Halogenoarenes
  • Explain why halogenoarenes cannot undergo nucleophilic substitution.
  • Determine products of electrophilic substitution on the benzene ring.
